| Bio: | I am the oldest of three kids I have a younger sister and a younger brother. My History: I was born on July 16, 1988 in Ottertail County Minnesota. I was due to be born on October 15, 1988. You can do the math but the bottom line is my mom was 5 months pregnant when I was born. I was born in a small hospital that had an operating room and a recovery room and the rest was a nursing home. It was a small town not equipped to handle a baby like me. I only weighed 1 LBs and 14 oz. I could fit in my dad's hand and he could slide his wedding ring up and down my leg when I was three months old. I had bleeders in my brain which are a baby's form of a stroke. The one on the right side of my brain was bigger than the one on the left side. So since the right side of your brain controls the left half of your body I have Cerebral Palsy. It is dominant on my left side so that is the side I have problems with. I was diagnosed with CP when I was two. I wore a leg brace that went from my knee to my foot from the time I was two till the time I was 15. That's thirteen years. I got an adult tricycle when I was thirteen because due to the CP I can't keep my balance when riding a bicycle. The action of pedaling is what helped to bring me out of the brace. Also because of the CP I can't participate in a lot of activities in my PE classes I will try anything once; I have even attempted roller skating in PE without letting my therapist or parents know. I ended up pulling a muscle in my left foot that took a year to heal. As a result of the bleeders I have a learning disability called Visual Perception Disorder or VPD. This disability means that for me to look at math in a book, the same math on a black board, and then the same math from my head to paper are several different processes that my brain can't necessarily do correctly. Something along the way in my processes trips up and I jumble up the numbers. This sounds like dyslexia but it is NOT. Dyslexia is with numbers and words. VPD is only numbers. Despite having these issues with math and physical activities I excel in English, literature, and foreign language. I am fluent in French and this past spring thanks mostly in part to my French teacher Madame Benson (Bonjour Madame!) I took the French National Test. I ranked 28th in the country and 21st in my home state of Iowa. I owe all that I do to my parents. Without them I couldn't do half of what I can. Without them I would be what the doctors were expecting, a vegetable. I am not and that is because of my parents love, faith, and hope that I would come through this, I have. I just graduated from a small Catholic High School. Jr High and high school have been tough but with the support of my parents, and my best friends: Emily, (my lil sis) Aly (my cousin) Abby, Allison, and Kelesy; I have come out a better and stronger person than I was when I started. There was a time when I wanted to be someone else, someone without all the things that I have, now I wouldn't change it for the world. So today's lesson my friends is don't lose faith God works miracles and also LOVE who you are because no one else could be you. | |||||
